Updating virus definitions is automatically. To do a check for virus definition updates your self, right click the AVG icon and choose Check for Updates. Furthermore, the check for updates, download and installation of the new virus definitions is straight forward.

The AVG Control Center is opened by right clicking the AVG icon in the system tray and choose for Launch AVG Control Center (see picture above). Here are several options available (with F3 and F4 you are able to switch between reduced and extended view):

TIP: I prefer to disable the option to certify e-mail (this will be shown below each e-mail you send). By double clicking the option E-mail Scanner, you can choose for the button Configure. Disable Certify mail for both incoming and outgoing mail. I prefer to disable the Check outgoing mail option as well (this option gives big problems in Norton AV: presumed send e-mail which is not send at all).

The AVG Test Center is also available by right clicking the AVG icon in the system tray, choose Launch AVG Test Center. For example, here you can do a scan for viruses on your computer and check the Virus Vault.
